For much of the year, the soil of the Barind region remains dry and cracked. Ponds shrink, crops struggle, and groundwater levels continue to fall. Against this reality, Ghashful’s ECCCP-Drought Project is working to strengthen water security and climate resilience in Niamatpur, Naogaon.
Implemented with financial and technical support from PKSF and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the wider project is operating through different partner organizations across 14 upazilas of Naogaon, Rajshahi, and Chapainawabganj, with an aim to improve the resilience of around 215,000 people.
On 8 October 2026, PKSF APC (Civil Engineer) Hedayet Ali and Ghashful Assistant Director K.M.G. Rabbani Bosunia visited project interventions in Niamatpur to review progress and quality.
During the field visit, they observed ongoing canal re-excavation and dam installation, as well as ponds re-excavated during the previous fiscal year. They also inspected a Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) system installed at a mosque, where rooftop rainwater is collected, filtered, and channelled underground—turning rainfall that would otherwise be lost into a resource for groundwater recharge.
The team also visited vermicompost activities, where organic waste is being transformed into nutrient-rich fertilizer, helping restore soil health while reducing farmers’ production costs. Necessary guidance was provided to ensure quality implementation and long-term sustainability of the interventions.
Efficient use of every water source, rainwater conservation, and better soil management are essential foundations of a climate-resilient community. Through the ECCCP-Drought Project, Ghashful is working to turn these principles into practical solutions for the drought-prone Barind region.
