Ghashful Explores Market Potential of Traditional Rakhine Food “Sidol” in Chauphaldandi, Cox’s Bazar

In the small Rakhine settlement of Chauphaldandi Union in Cox’s Bazar, a distinct food culture and a tradition of diverse, self-reliant production have existed for generations. One such traditional food item is “Sidol.” For the Rakhine community, Sidol is more than just a delicacy. It carries their culture, memory and identity. Yet its presence in the mainstream market remains limited. This is where Ghashful’s initiative has become important.

On 07 December, a team from Ghashful participated in a preliminary assessment to explore ways to develop Rakhine produced Sidol into a hygienic and market ready product. KGM Rabbani Basunia, Assistant Director of the organization, and Project Coordinator Sirajul Islam visited the producers, spoke with them and collected information on product quality, processing methods and future potential. Rakhine women were especially encouraged by this engagement.

The Rakhine community in Cox’s Bazar has long preserved its own culture, language and food traditions. Foods such as Sidol, mashed dishes and Loti curry represent both their heritage and a potential avenue for the local economy. Ghashful is working to advance this potential even further. Their aim is to train Rakhine producers, ensure hygienic production and create opportunities for market access that will increase income for the community.

Three notable changes are already emerging through this initiative

  1. Producers are beginning to understand the need for standard and improved processing while making Sidol.
  2. Plans are being developed to introduce packaged Rakhine products to the market.
  3. Rakhine women and their families are gaining new confidence about their economic future.

Although the Rakhine community is culturally rich, they remain economically marginalized. Ghashful’s goal is not only to improve a single product but to transform a cultural tradition into economic strength. This will help Rakhine families move toward sustainable development while preserving their identity.

This small initiative in Chauphaldandi marks the beginning of a larger vision. It is a practical effort to promote the skills, traditions, culture and economic opportunities of the Rakhine people. Ghashful believes that with proper support and planning, Rakhine products will soon find recognition not only in local markets but across the country.
