People in remote communities of Naogaon may no longer need to travel to cities for initial cataract screening. Through a simple one-minute screening process, trained field staff can now identify possible cataract cases and connect patients with appropriate eye care services.
With support from Orbis International and PKSF, Ghashful has undertaken this initiative in collaboration with Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital to bring essential eye care closer to underserved rural communities.
Special training sessions on “One-Minute Cataract Screening and Software Data Entry” were held on 28 and 29 July 2026 at Ghashful’s Chaumasia, Satihat, and Patnitala offices in the Naogaon Zone. Zonal Managers, Area Managers, Branch Managers, and Credit Officers from Ghashful’s microfinance program participated in the training.
Participants learned to use Orbis International’s digital application and software for rapid preliminary screening and secure recording of patient information. The sessions were facilitated by Ghashful Officer (SDP) Md. Kohinur Islam, with technical guidance from Md. Mizanur Rahman of Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital’s Patnitala Branch.
Following the training, a plan was developed to facilitate free cataract surgery for more than 100 underserved people over the next two months. Potential patients will be identified through courtyard meetings and group sessions, and their information will be digitally recorded for referral and follow-up.
By combining community outreach, digital technology, and institutional partnerships, Ghashful aims to make eye care more accessible and help prevent avoidable blindness among rural and disadvantaged populations.
