Under the Ghashful CARE Project, pond re excavation activities are currently underway in Chakbeni Adivasipara of Mathura Union, Badalgachhi Upazila, Naogaon. In this drought prone region, ensuring access to freshwater is crucial, and pond restoration is being implemented as a key intervention to address water scarcity.
The project titled “CARE: Community Based Adaptation for Resilient Empowerment of Adivasi in Barind Region of Naogaon” is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP). Designed for an 18 month period through July 2026, the initiative directly engages nearly 400 indigenous families in Badalgachhi Sadar and Mathura unions.
The project adopts an integrated and multi dimensional approach to climate adaptation. Key interventions include drought resilient agriculture and livestock training, homestead vegetable cultivation, vermicomposting, pond re excavation for water conservation, introduction of Managed Aquifer Recharge technology for rainwater harvesting, promotion of improved cookstoves, climate adaptation workshops, and safe poultry and fish farming practices.
Women’s empowerment remains a central pillar of the project. Women are actively involved in planning and implementing adaptation strategies, and their participation in household and community level decision making processes is strongly encouraged.
Badalgachhi has long faced recurring drought, declining soil fertility and water scarcity, putting indigenous livelihoods at significant risk. Through the CARE Project, Ghashful aims to enhance climate resilience, strengthen adaptive capacity and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for indigenous communities in the Barind region.
