On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, an environmental awareness and tree plantation program was held on 17 June at Niamatpur Girls’ High School and College in Niamatpur Upazila.
With rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, deforestation, and biodiversity loss becoming pressing realities, environmentalists emphasize that climate change is no longer a future concern but a present challenge. In this context, local-level initiatives like this are becoming increasingly important.
The program was organized under the ECCCP–Drought Project, implemented by Ghashful with technical and financial support from Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) and the GEF Small Grants Programme.
The event was chaired by Principal Gopal Chandra Pal, while Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mosammat Murshida Khatun attended as the Chief Guest. Special guests included Deputy Director Jayanta Kumer Bosu, Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Rafiqul Islam, Assistant Director K.M.G. Rabbani Bosunia, and Zonal Manager Md. Anwar Hossain. The program was facilitated by Project Coordinator Mohammad Abdullah.
As part of the initiative, five saplings were distributed among teachers and students. Ghashful officials emphasized that tree plantation is being prioritized across all program areas in line with national afforestation goals, while also calling for greater awareness to address environmental conservation and climate change challenges.
As highlighted during the event, a tree is not just a source of shade—it is a promise for a sustainable future.
